Between river and plot is a forested boulder pile--just upstream is a bedrock riverscour prairie (GARI.81). Upslope forest is deciduous with heavy Rhododendron maximum cover. Also in this backchannel slough is backwater BENI with tall herbs.;Backwater slough behind a pile of boulders from a bedrock controlled rapids zone of the Gauley River, shallow alluvium deposits on sandstone bedrock supports on emergent wetland community dominated by Saggitaria latifolia and Sparganium. Wetland hydrology probably maintained by a combination of overbank flooding, rainfall on impermeable bedrock and seepage from upslope. Lots of mud on lower leaves-slow phenology.
Representativeness
Plot includes all of small patch emergent wetland which occurs in a partially shaded backwater slough dogleg shape to accommodate community homogeneity.
